Moving up from a 3018: what the next machine adds on paper

The 3018-PROVer V2 against every machine in the record up to $1,500: how much more work area, Z, drive and spindle you get.

The 3018 is the machine a lot of people start on: small, cheap and enough to learn the whole design-to-cut process. When it starts to feel small, the question is what the next machine actually adds. This guide compares the SainSmart 3018-PROVer V2, as SainSmart lists it, with every machine in the record that publishes its work area and costs $1,500 or less. Nothing here has been tested for this site; it's what the spec pages say.

Where you're starting from

SainSmart lists the 3018-PROVer V2 at $219.00 with a work area of 290 × 180 mm and 40 mm of Z. Its page says it uses a "leadscrew" and a 775 spindle, and doesn't give the spindle's power. Those are the figures everything below is measured against.

Upgrading parts of a 3018 instead of replacing it, and how any of these machines perform in use. The record holds complete machines as their makers describe them.
